Why rental owners want their own website
Airbnb and VRBO bring guests, and they also take a fee on every booking, control the relationship with your guest and can change their rules or bury your listing whenever they want. Your own website gives you a second door: past guests can rebook, people searching on Google can find you, and you decide how much to charge.
It does not have to replace the platforms. For most owners, the right setup is both: the platforms for discovery, your site for repeat guests, direct inquiries and search traffic.
Two ways to start
- Showcase site with synced calendar. Photos, amenities, location, house rules, guides and a live availability calendar synced from Airbnb and VRBO. Guests book through the platform or contact you. Simple, low risk, and it starts building search traffic.
- Full direct booking site. Everything above plus online booking and payment on your own domain, with your own cancellation policy, deposits and damage protection rules.
Many owners start with the first and switch to the second once direct inquiries appear.
How a rental website gets found
Nobody searches for the name of your chalet. They search for the trip: a ski chalet near a resort, a cabin with a hot tub near a lake, a family rental close to a beach. The website needs pages that answer those searches honestly, with real details about your place and the area.
- A page for each season or use: ski weekends, summer, family trips, work retreats
- Local guides with distances to slopes, trails, restaurants and grocery stores
- Fast loading photos that work on phones
- Structured data so Google understands it is a vacation rental
- A Google Business Profile where it makes sense
- Bilingual pages if your guests come from two language markets
What about direct booking software?
Lodgify, Hostaway, Guesty and OwnerRez include website builders, and for owners already paying for one of them, that can be enough. You pay monthly, the design is template based and the site often lives on their domain. A custom site is yours, can be designed around your property and the region, and costs little to run. Questions, answered
Will my calendar stay in sync with Airbnb and VRBO?
Yes. Calendars sync through the iCal links the platforms provide. Platforms refresh these links on their own schedule, so we explain the small delay and how to avoid double bookings.
Can I take payments on my website?
Yes, with Stripe. You decide on deposits, balance timing and cancellation rules. Check local rules on taxes and short term rental permits for your area.
Can the site be in two languages?
Yes. A French first site with English, for example, suits Quebec rentals that host guests from Ontario and the US.
I have several properties. Does that change anything?
Each property gets its own page and calendar, and the site can let guests search by dates across all of them.
